Carol Naiman Waldman, an elected delegate to the 2012 Democractic National Convention, has spent her career advocating for children and women’s issues on political campaigns, for non-profits and in public service. She began working on human rights issues and political campaigns in college, soon taking leadership roles in San Diego and California Young Democrats. She served on the legislative staff of the Chula Vista City Council, then joined Lucy Killea’s first state senate campaign. After Senator Killea prevailed over an anti-choice candidate in a bitter campaign, Carol became a coordinator for the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL), relocating to Illinois and Iowa to recruit and train volunteers. In 1991, she joined the staff of Assemblymember Dede Alpert. After a move to Los Angeles, she headed public affairs for the National Council of Jewish Women, also volunteering on the Women Helping Women talk line in the evenings. Carol left NCJW to obtain a Masters degree at U.S.C., working for Kaiser Permanente and the Mayor of Los Angeles in between classes. After graduate school, she joined PR firm Millennium Services, Inc., where she handled media relations for political candidates, special events and businesses. Subsequently, she returned to legislative service on the staff of Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson.
Now settled again in San Diego, Carol continues to focus on advocacy for children and women. She serves on the Advisory Board of Run Women Run, training and supporting women running for elected office. She was a founding board member of the Carmel Valley Democratic Club, and now serves as membership chair of the Rancho Santa Fe Democratic Club. At her children’s elementary school, Solana Santa Fe, she sits on the school’s Site Planning Committee and has chaired Red Ribbon Week the past two years. She especially enjoys spending time as a co-leader of her daughter’s local Girl Scout troop.
During her career, Carol has served as a delegate to more than a dozen California State Democratic Conventions and the DNC in 2012. She was elected president of the San Diego Young Democrats and later the National Committeewoman and Vice President of the California Young Democrats. She has also been in active in many community organizations including the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Los Angeles Jewish Community Relations Council, and the Anti-Defamation League, where she graduated from the Salvin Leadership Institute.
